The Real Reason You’re Struggling to Make Progress

Have you ever felt that no matter what you do, even if you work really hard, things just don’t work out? You see others for whom success seems to happen naturally, yet you feel like you’re not making progress.
In my experience coaching people over the years, I’ve discovered that when we look really deep, underneath our habits are our personal values. They help us understand why we do what we do. In that sense, if you feel like you’re rowing against the current, it’s often because of a lack of being congruent with what you truly value.
But when you get clear on your values, you can begin to organize your life around them. Here is a simple plan to start:
- Identify What’s Important to You: First, discover what you really value. I advise my clients to get a notebook and simply write everything that comes to mind. Think about what motivates you—is it family, health, service, financial security? Don’t judge the answers, just get them on paper.
- Give Your Values a Priority: Life is full of conflicts, and you will have to decide what’s most important. If we try to please everything and everyone, it won’t work. When everything is important, nothing is. You have to decide which values belong at the top of your list.
- Define How Your Values Look in Real Life: This is probably the hardest part. You might say family is important, but what does that mean? How does it look in your daily schedule? When you describe your values to yourself as clearly as possible, it becomes easy to live according to them.
When you do this, you will be more productive because you are giving your time and attention to what is important. These values are really your inner compass. If you know this, things will be so much easier for you.
If you’re ready to stop rowing against the current and find your direction, I can help.
